ATTENTION ALL SWANTON
DOG OWNERS
There has been an increase in dog-related incidents and a high rate of unlicensed dogs in the Town and Village of Swanton during the past year. This has resulted in increased costs to the taxpayers as the Town Selectmen endeavor to resolve these issues. All dogs or wolf-hybrids six months or older must be licensed by April 1st of each year and must wear a collar and tag at all times.
Vermont law states that rabies certificates are valid for 3 years from the date of issue. A valid rabies certificate must accompany requests for a dog license. Please remember that if your dog is being licensed for the first time and is spayed or neutered, a certificate from a licensed veterinarian must be presented at the time of licensing. All dogs or wolf-hybrids 6 months or older that are not now licensed are delinquent and subject to impoundment. Delinquent license fees are $15.00 for neutered or spayed dogs and $21.00 for others.
The Swanton Board of Selectmen are issuing warrants authorizing the Swanton Animal Control Officer to impound all unlicensed dogs per 20 VSA Section 3621. The owners of impounded dogs may reclaim the dog after payment of the license fee, a $75.00 fine and impoundment fees. An impounded dog not claimed after four (4) business days may be destroyed, sold or given for adoption in accordance with Section Nine of the Town of Swanton Dog Control Ordinance.
